As most of you will know the campaign to enable the Hornby Exchange has been successful, and Steve is to be congratulated for motivating all of us, so now we wait for BT to make it happen. The campaign for wireless broadband from Cleo continues, and with everyone's help we should get that this year too. This will mean that everyone who want's broadband in the valley will get it, even those who land line won't reach. Please will everyone post their opinions and experiences with different ISPs on this forum, then we get the benefit of their knowledge. If you know of a good one at a good price then post. Same applies if you know of bad ones! Thanks.

Just found this on the web: Freeserve will on 3rd February 2003, be offering the first three months of its 0.5Mbps ADSL broadband service for just £15.99 per month, returning to the standard £27.99 (inc VAT) per month after that. This offer also includes free activation and a free USB ADSL modem. The offer is priced to tempt people across from the dial-up platforms, and certainly does provide a cheap entry into the broadband arena for users. The basic 0.5Mbps speed service will also allow users to experience the majority of broadband video content that runs at 300kbps, which the slower 256kbps and 150kbps service users miss out on. After the first month a 12 month contract is in force. For more details visit www.freeserve.com/broadband or telephone 0800 781 9000.

I found another site for cheapish landline broadband, www.easily.co.uk if anyone wants to check it out. We are progressing with our task of setting up a wireless broadband link via CLEO at the University for people who can't get the landline version. We are having a course on wireless networking at Wray if anyone wants to come and learn about it. We are still looking for grants so if you know anyone with pots of money to give away tell us! The school now has the hardware to pick up it's CLEO link, we are just waiting for NTL to couple up the stuff to the mast at Melling. That's all the news for now.

After the succesful Landline Broadband Campaign I have just been informed that the exchange will be enabled on the 16th June 2004. There is a message board on www.getonandgetit.co.uk/HornbyBroadbandNow/ if you want to post your news and views on service providers or any other topic. Depending on how close you are to the exchange the full range of connection speeds may be available from 512kbps right up to the 2Mbps.

We are keeping the village website www.wrayvillage.co.uk updated with news of the broadband services that we are testing out in the Wray area. These include a satellite connection and a wireless link from the University. We hope to have more information to give you all soon. Anyone in the area with knowledge of these technologies will you please come forward and join the committee? we need more geeks. We are all learning geekspeak at classes, but it is a slow job as there is so much to learn. Any age/size/shape of person welcome, we are a harmelss bunch with one common aim, - to get ourselves a hunk of broadband, especially for rural areas who can't get landline. Chris.

Broadband is here at last!! we have our first trial up and running. We have a satellite connection via Avanti to the Botton area, and have wirelessly connected to Millhouses and Tatham. We are trying to connect more people as we learn how to do it, and after the trial will endeavour to provide a service to all. email me to register, we have enough people already to be viable but we will try to connect people in the order they have registered, so don't get missed off the list... So you folks are up to speed? I have got a website for you to play with; www.numion.com/index.htmlThis website will track how fast your connection truly is. Over on this side the pond, I average about 300kbs. I just checked again and am up to 409. Of course there are a lot variables, but this still a good way to compare notes. Those tech folks that run the wireless are always intrested to hear from informed customers about their speed. Let me know what you are up to. Speed wise that is. Don't want to get to personal. ;D

Ha ha, think I beat you to the answer! even now I have broadband I am still very slow, only 66kbps average compared with your 400+. I will try in the morning and see if I can get a faster connection. I will go and try it on the modem now. It might make you feel better to know your service in American Wray is better than ours in British Wray... Fancy, and once we ruled the world pretty near. BLiar has a lot to answer for. BTW we started putting up the scarecrows tonight.
